The Isolation of Pectic Substances from Wood* by Ernest Anderson

چکیده
Pectin is considered by many investigators to be the tetramethyl ester of an acid composed of 4 molecules of d-galacturonic acid, 1 molecule of d-galactose, and 1 molecule of Larabinose (1). However, experimental work described by Morell, Baur, and Link (2) indicates that the pectin molecule is more complex and contains between 8 and 10 molecules of d-galacturonic acid. The data obtained by repeatedly crystallizing calcium pectate and analyzing the various crops support the view of Link and his collaborators. Pectic substances readily lose a part of their combined sugar during purification. As a result, the data obtained on analysis of a pectate will depend on the previous treatment of the material. Several explanations have been given for the origin of pectic substances, hemicelluloses, and lignin in plants. Candlin and Schryver (3) suggested that the hemicelluloses are formed from pectic substances. Other workers believe that lignin is formed from pectin. Buston (4) has discussed the relation among these classes of compounds. He concludes that they are not formed from each other. The present investigation supports the conclusions of Buston. It is possible that pectic substances, hemicelluloses, lignin, and perhaps some phenolic bodies are formed from carbohydrates by a process of intermolecular oxidation and reduction whereby energy is liberated for use by the growing plant.

Branfoot (1) has summarised the early work on pectic substances. Bonner (2), Norman (3), and Hirst and Jones (4) have reviewed later work on the structure of these substances. Pectic materials that approximate the composition and have some of the properties of pectic acid are widely distributed but in small amounts in mature hardwoods. In 1925 O’Dwyer (5) isolated such a material from beechwood...
متن کاملXxvi. the Nature of the Pectic Substances of Flax
As the result of recent researches our knowledge of the pectic substances of plants has become more systematic, and it is proposed in the present paper to adhere to the nomenclature adopted by the American Pectin Symposium of 1925. Thus we are now acquainted with protopectin, the naturally occurring pectic substance; pectin, the substance extracted from the plant by chemical or other means with...
متن کاملPectic Acid Effects on Prolactin Secretion in GH3/B6 Rat Pituitary Cell Line
Background: Pectic acid extracted from plants increases the secretion of prolactin (PRL) when injected intravenously into ewes or fed to rats. Fragments of ewe hypophysis and lactating rabbit mammary gland incubated in vitro in the presence of pectic acid secreted more PRL and caseins compared to the controls. However, it is not known whether pectic acid directly stimulates PRL secretion in pi...

The pectic enzymes produced in vitro by 8 isolates (5 Highly virulent and 3 Weakly virulent) of Fusarium oxysporum , were detected by spectrophotometry, and characterized by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with substrate-containing gels (zymogram). Analysis of the polygalacturonase (PG) isozyme banding patterns (zymogram) identified two distinct phenotypes among the isolates from chickpea (C...
